Joel was a prophet from 835-796 BC and the son of Pethuel.
Joel was sent to the nation of Judah, also known as the Southern Kingdom. His message was sin brings God’s judgement. Yet with God’s justice there is also great mercy.
Joel began with a prophecy about the destruction of the land and ended with a prophecy about its restoration. He began by emphasizing the need for repentance and ended with the promise of forgiveness that repentance brings. Joel was trying to convince the Jews to wake up, get rid of their complacency and realize the danger of living apart from God.
Joel’s message to us today, is that there is still time. Anyone who calls on God can be saved. Those who turn to God will enjoy the blessings mentioned in Joel’s prophecy, those who refuse will face destruction.
