What Does It Mean To Become Born Again

“Jesus answered and saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee. Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

“Nicodemus saith unto him. How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?”

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, Isay unto thee. Except a man be born of Water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.” (John 3 v 3-5)

In his reply to Nicodemus, Jesus was explaining the importance of spiritual rebirth and contrasting it with physical birth. Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, we should then pay attention to his divine identity and life-giving message.

“Of Water and of the Spirit” refers to an individual being regenerated (changed) by the Holy Spirit and demonstrating that rebirth by baptism.

Jesus also explained that individuals cannot control the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit works in ways we cannot predict or understand. Just as you did not control your physical birth, likewise you cannot control your spiritual birth.

Your new birth is a gift from God through the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ gave himself as a sacrifice for our sins. Because we are God’s children, we share in great treasures as joint heirs. God has given us his best gifts; his Son, his Spirit, love, forgiveness and eternal life.

When Jesus talked about unbelievers, he meant those who rejected or ignored God completely. Many people do not want their lives exposed to God’s light because they are afraid of what it will reveal. They don’t want to be changed and do what is right in the sight of God.

People often try to protect themselves from their fears by putting their trust in something they do or have; their good works, their skill or intelligence, their money or possessions. But only God can save us from the one thing we really need to fear-eternal condemnation.

New believers trust in God by recognizing the insufficiency of our own efforts to find Salvation and by asking Jesus Christ to do his work in us. Some people are repulsed by the idea of eternal life because of unbelief and their lives are miserable. But eternal life is not an extension of man’s miserable mortal life.

Eternal life is God’s life embodied in Jesus Christ, given to all believers now as a guarantee that they will live forever. In eternal life there is no death, sickness, enemy, evil or sin. When we don’t know God, individuals tend to make choices as though this life was all they had. The reality is, this life on earth is just the introduction to eternity.

Receive this new life today by faith and begin to evaluate all that happens from an eternal perspective.
